As he grew older, Papa continued to speak Khmer with his family and friends, and it remained an integral part of his daily life. Even when he moved to the United States to start a new life, Papa continued to speak Khmer with his family and community.
When I married into Papa’s family, I was eager to learn more about their culture and language. Papa, being the kind and patient person that he is, offered to teach me some basic Khmer phrases. At first, it was a bit challenging, but with Papa’s guidance, I began to pick up the language.
My husband-in-law, who we’ll call “Papa,” grew up in a small village in Cambodia. He was born and raised in a traditional Khmer family, where the language was spoken at home and in the community.
